Al
Cantu, Jr. served as State Commander of the Department of Texas
Veterans of Foreign Wars during 2007-2008.
A
life member of Post 2397, Cantu has served two terms as District
6 Commander 2002 and 2004, State Convention Chairman 2002-2003,
and State Surgeon 2004-2005. He has been recognized in other roles
in the Veterans of Foreign Wars such as, J. T. Rutherford Award
recipient in 2002-2003, Captain of the All State Team 2002-2003,
All American District Commander 2002-2003, National Aide-de-Camp
and National Veterans Care Committee. In 2009, Al was appointed
by the Governor of Texas, Rick Perry, to serve as a Commissioner
to the Texas Veterans Commission.
Cantu
served in the US Army from 1958-1978, serving in Korea, Germany
and Vietnam. He was commissioned a 2LT after graduating Officer
Candidate School and he retired with the rank of Major. Among his
medals and Decorations are the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Army
Commendation Medal and Good Conduct Medal w/2 OLC, National Defense
Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (two awards), Vietnam Service
Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, VCM, and Parachutist
Badge.
Born
in Sebastian, Texas on September 19, Al Cantu and his wife Alma
reside in Corpus Christi, Texas. They have raised three children,
and have one granddaughter, three grandsons and three great granddaughters.
