Upon high school graduation, residents of the National Home’s Residential Program are eligible for the Aftercare Program. Unlike governmental childcare agencies, the National Home’s relationship does not end when residents graduate. If youth do not feel prepared to live on their own, they are welcome to “stay at home” by living in a specific home set aside for Aftercare at the National Home.
Depending on their next step in life, youth may choose to live at the National Home full-time and attend school or work in the area. Others may come home on weekends and holidays to rest, study and do laundry just like their peers in school return to their homes. A staff member manages the household and all occupants help with chores and domestic responsibilities.
Similar to the Single Parent Family Program, there is a productivity standard to remain in Aftercare at the National Home. The Continuing Education Assistance Committee at the National Home manages the Program and reviews the individual circumstances of each resident. Youth must be enrolled in college or advanced education courses or working full-time to qualify. Those who qualify may stay in the program for up to four years.
The Aftercare Program defines the National Home as an all-encompassing program of support for the children and families of veterans. The National Home goes beyond providing food and shelter by providing a home and family atmosphere until young adults are prepared to join their communities as fully functioning contributors.
