High school graduates at the VFW National Home for Children are offered opportunities for advanced training through the Continuing Education Assistance (CEA) program. Designed to assist students in seeking their maximum potential, funding for the CEA program is made possible by the members of the VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary, the Military Order of the Cootie and its Ladies Auxiliary and an estate gift by the late R. Robert Dale.

A CEA Committee, comprised of National Home staff members, is responsible for implementing and overseeing the CEA program and provides periodic reports on its use to the Home’s Board of Trustees. Students must apply to the Committee for acceptance into the National Home’s Continuing Education Assistance program. The CEA program is designed to supplement other forms of financial aid, not serve as the sole source of funding. Students are expected to contribute toward the cost of their college education through work, scholarship applications and the completion of current federal student aid application forms.

All Residential Program graduates, former Residential Program students and Single Parent Family Program children are eligible to apply for varying levels of support. All applicants must:
  • Demonstrate a cooperative attitude and responsible behavior
  • Be accepted as a student at a college, trade school or special instructional institution
  • Apply for assistance within two years of graduating from High School
  • Register with the Selective Service (males only)
Special circumstances apply to all students, and the National Home’s CEA Committee works together to assess need and qualifications on a case-by-case basis.

Once a student is accepted into the CEA program, they are expected to maintain a strong relationship with the National Home. Students reapply every year and are required to work with a National Home Case Manager to develop a plan for success. The CEA Committee reviews the plan and any changes must be approved. Students are expected to maintain a high productivity standard, including community service, work, education, and activities included in the CEA plan for success.

Donations to the CEA program can be sent to the National Home and earmarked for “Scholarships.” Graduates of the National Home may contact the Program Department for more information on applying. Working with individual residents to create a plan for lifelong success and supplying them with the tools they need to accomplish their goals is the foundation of the CEA program.
