Fun, friendship and fitness are the active elements of the Recreation Department at the National Home. The National Home’s Recreation Department plans, develops and implements physical and life-long learning activities for all school-age residents of the National Home. A two person staff works toward a goal of teaching physical health, social skills and decision-making strategies in a fun environment.

On campus, the Recreation Department manages the Community Center, hosting open hours for indoor and outdoor games, arts and crafts and weight training. Residents are encouraged to take some ownership of the Community Center and the activities that take place, including organizing basketball games, pool tournaments and other events.

When it’s time to pack into National Home vans and head off campus, the Recreation Department is usually behind the activity. Swimming in the local school pool, roller-skating and bowling are just some of the day trips organized by the staff. Annual traditions such as the March trip to the Caravan Circus and the summer venture to Cedar Point Amusement Park are also planned and organized by the Recreation Department.

Staff also manages National Home participation in the Eaton County 4-H Program. This program is for residents ages 9-19 years old. From April to July, the National Home’s Montana Farmstead is alive with the sounds and activity of an active hog and rabbit program. Children sign up to raise an animal and are responsible for cleaning, feeding and exercising their animals several times a week. All of the hard work pays off, however, when the VFW Dynamos show their animals at the Eaton County Fair at the end of July. Throughout the year, participants may also participate in meetings.
