The Residential Program at the VFW National Home for Children provides for school aged children whose parents are deceased, disabled, or whose home environment is not conducive to their physical or emotional well-being. As part of the long-term program, these children live in a household with one or two “house parents” and several other residents as a family.

Together, the unique mixture of National Home staff “house parents” and children function as a family. Vans transport children to sports games and church youth group meetings, music practices and community service activities. Surrounded by the support of other National Home services, these residential families wrap these children in a warm, loving atmosphere. Supervision is guaranteed for the children 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Children remain in the Residential Program until they are 18 or graduate from high school, at which time they may leave to rejoin family members, build an independent life on their own, or remain at the National Home through the Aftercare Program and advance their education at a local college or university.

The Residential Program functions under the Administrative rules of Michigan, Act 116, P.A. 1973 for Child Care and Child Placing. The National Home Residential Care Programs provide services based on the children’s individual needs, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, or gender.
