In the final installment of our series celebrating the history of the VFW National Home for Children, we take a look at some of the notable events of the present decade and how those accomplishments are helping ensure we are able to continue to offer struggling military and veteran families the opportunity to live in the National Home’s peaceful and caring atmosphere while they get their lives back on track. Awesome Gang spreads holiday cheer

The Awesome Gang is getting into the holiday spirit early this year. On Sunday night, the group invited campus residents and staff to join them in making Christmas cards to send to soldiers through the American Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes program. Surrounded by friends, and with the sounds of Jingle Bells, Deck the Halls and other Christmas favorites playing in the background, this crew of crafty card-makers produced handmade cards that will surely spread cheer this holiday season. Tribute Park expands!

It was a busy summer in the National Home’s Tribute Park! With two new paths, a new bench, new trees and several new plaques, the park continues to grow as a place of beauty and serenity to be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. Take a stroll down Path #2, the new VFW Auxiliary Department of Florida Members’ Path. Rest a moment on the new bronze bench honoring “Florida’s own veteran” past National Home Board President Jack McDermott. And take in the beauty of the new Waterlily Magnolia Tree.
