Welcome home Vietnam veterans

On March 29, the VFW National Home for Children stands with the entire nation in commemorating Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day. From the Presidential Proclamation: Our veterans answered our country's call and served with honor, and on March 29, 1973, the last of our troops left Vietnam. Yet, in one of the war's most profound tragedies, many of these men and women came home to be shunned or neglected -- to face treatment unbefitting their courage and a welcome unworthy of their example. We must never let this happen again. Today, we reaffirm one of our most fundamental obligations: to show all who have worn the uniform of the United States the respect and dignity they deserve, and to ho

Extra sweet moment at this year's Easter Treat

Sometimes it's the small, unexpected moments that remind us what's really important. Last weekend, the Ohio Cooties brought the Easter Bunny to the National Home for the annual Easter Treat. In addition to photos with the Easter Bunny, there was the Easter egg hunt, ice cream sundaes in the cafe and lots of fun to be had climbing on inflatables in the gym. Important changes coming to Campbell's Labels for Education program

It's not too late to turn in your Campbell's Labels for Education UPCs and help us earn our seventh (yes, seventh!) van before the program comes to an end, but there's not much time to help us collect the remaining 184,985 points we need. The Campbell's Labels for Education program as we know it is ending August 1, 2016. Starting in the 2016-2017 school year, Campbell's will only accept UPCs with the Labels for Education logo on them. At the same time, they will begin phasing out the logo from their products. You can learn more about the changes on the Labels for Education website. In the meantime, Campbell's will continue to honor UPCs from all eligible products, as well as all bonus offers

Life Skills program builds confidence, prepares youth for adulthood

One of the most popular offerings for young people living at the National Home is the Life Skills program. The Life Skills program covers a variety of topics, including money, time and household management, employment and other life skills. A main focus of the program is learning to set realistic goals that can be achieved in a set time period. This helps the group see success and realize that if they want something, there are steps they need to take to achieve it. Along with group classes, the program has brought several speakers to campus to present to the group, including world-class athletes, NASA scientists, members of law enforcement and others. Each year, members who participate in gr
