Third annual VFW race draws nearly 300 racers in support of the National Home

Nearly 300 racers turned out last month for the VFW Post #805 0.1K race in O'Fallon, Illinois. The race course, all 328 feet of it, began at the train car in Downtown O’Fallon. From there racers ran straight, stopping at the hydration station at the halfway point at South Cherry Street, and then finishing in front of the VFW post. It took the first place runner under two minutes to complete the race. Paul and Sharon Zinck organized the event, now in its third year. VFW Post #3873 in Naperviille also hosts a 0.1K race, and between the two posts, they have raised more than $40,000 for the National Home, not counting this year's race! Turning Point: Hoskins family in the news again for their financial achievements

National Home alumni Shawn and Melinda Hoskins and their family are in the news again! USAA recently featured them as part of their Turning Point series, highlighting the tremendous financial strides they were able to make while living at the National Home. We're so proud of the Hoskins family for the incredible strides they made, both financially and emotionally during their time with us at the National Home. Their story is a shining example of the transformation families can make when they live here. If you know a family who is struggling, encourage them to visit our website to learn more about our offerings and how we help families like theirs get back on track.

National Home Purples Up for Military Kids

Residents and staff of the National Home gathered today to "purple up" in honor of the Month of the Military Child. Today, nearly two million military-connected children and youth (birth through age 22) live with perpetual challenges presented by frequent moves, parental deployments, and a host of life transitions that include reintegration and dealing with profoundly changed parents. Each April, we recognize the service and sacrifice of these military- and veteran-connected children. Grit, determination, and perseverance are a few characteristics of the resilient trailblazers we know as military kids. These traits are a result of the challenges they persist through, and contribute to stron

VFW Dynamos ready for another great year

A sure sign of spring at the National Home is the arrival of the hogs and rabbits for our 4-H club, the VFW Dynamos. The National Home’s 4-H program was launched in 1952. At that time, children had 10 different fields of activity to choose from including: gardening, archery, food preparation, dairy, egg production, swine raising and beef raising. Today’s 4-H participants raise either hogs or rabbits to show at the Eaton County Fair in July, as well as participating in non-livestock projects such as t-shirt painting, making no sew blankets, and gardening. The 4-H program is a big deal at the National Home, and lots of families and staff members head over to the fairgrounds each summer to che

The gift of peace of mind

Spring in southern Michigan means severe weather season is upon us--a threat we know all too well here at the National Home. And a threat we are better prepared to face, thanks to your generous support. When the National Home was hit by two devastating storms in less than a year, we came to you asking for your help to support an Emergency Fund that would be used to recover from these storms and prepare for the next storm. We are pleased to report that your contributions have allowed us to purchase and install several commercial size generators throughout our campus, which will allow us to keep vital community services up and running during future power outages. We now have a generator to ru
