Illinois/Indiana Days!

The VFW Departments of Illinois and Indiana enjoyed a beautiful weekend full of warm autumn sunshine and crisp cool breezes as they toured our campus. Saturday morning members from Illinois, along with a small group from Pennsylvania, arrived at the National Home for tours of their homes and of our facilities. Illinois was especially keen to see the beautiful new playground equipment that they fund-raised for in front of the duplexes. Our visitors enjoyed the beautiful fall day walking around our campus and learning about the National Home and our program. Sunday morning was a little cooler as we welcomed members from Indiana and took them on guided tours of the museum, nursery, guest lod

Judd A Thon 2016: Small distance = big benefit for the National Home

The third annual Judd A Thon stepped off at precisely 10:01 a.m. on a sunny Sunday in Naperville, Illinois. The winner crossed the finish line in seconds. But what the race lacks in distance, it makes up for in generosity. Since its inaugural run in 2014, this event has raised more than $50,000 for the National Home. Development Director, Sue Alverson and her family had a blast this year representing the National Home and participating in the big race. Special thanks go to Sr. Vice Commander Pablo Araya and Service Officer Mike Barbour for their work organizing the event again this year. The race is named in honor of Lt. Oliver J. "Judd" Kendall who was captured and killed during the battle

This is only one of six days a year that this flag is allowed to be flown. However these veterans are recognized and remembered year round at the permanent POW/MIA display lo

Nothing quite celebrates the beginning of Fall like a big bowl of steaming hot, thick and chunky chili, and what better way to bring together a community than a little friendly competition? The Annual VFW National Home for Children Chili Competition kicked off last night with members of our community sampling the offerings and voting on them. The group was unable to reach a unanimous decision and a tie for first place was awarded to a white chicken chili and a more traditional chili called “Sherry’s Chili”. This event was also a time for staff to share all of the resources on campus with residents and talk about new programs that are just getting started. Speakers covered a range of topic
