National Home installs new board members at Annual Meeting and celebrates at Fall Festival

Each October, the Life Members of the National Home come together for the Annual Life Member Meeting. During this meeting, the Board of Trustees installs its new members, and we honor the trustees whose terms are ending. This year we had the pleasure of swearing in new District 10 Trustee Sylvia Sanchez and District 6 Trustee Armithea “Sissy” Borel and, as well as new Board President Thomas Tweet and Board Vice President Dave Ouellette. We also honored and thanked Former District 10 Trustee, Al Cantu, and District 6 Trustee, Jim Mueller, for their years of dedication to the National Home. Virginia Carman also wrapped up her term as board president. (But don’t worry, she will still be a trust

Santa's Shop spreads the joy of giving to all!

Each holiday season, we make sure even the youngest residents of the National Home get to experience the joy of giving! In December, we transform the Community Center auditorium into Santa’s Shop, where children can select the perfect gifts for the important people in their lives. Here, they will find a wide variety of books, toys, games and other useful and fun items they can purchase for family members, teachers and friends, using credits they have earned through community service. Young people at the National Home take part in a variety of community service projects throughout the year, earning credits to spend at Santa's Shop. Several young people (above) recently cleaned out a storage a

Residents Volunteer for 'A Day To Change Direction' at VA Hospital

Young residents of the VFW National Home for Children took part in the “A Day to Change Direction” by volunteering at the VA Hospital in Battle Creek on Thursday the 13th of October. This particular visit was meant to help bring awareness to our nationwide epidemic of mental and emotional illness, with special attention to our nation’s veterans and their families who suffer from these serious issues. VFW Auxiliary National President, Collette Bishop, and VFW National Commander-in-Chief, Brian Duffy, are joining forces to participate in the Change Direction Initiative, a collection of concerned citizens, nonprofit leaders,

The kids learn about fire safety

Since 1922, Fire Prevention Week has been observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which October 9 falls. Recently, the kids at the nursery were paid a visit by a friendly firefighter from Windsor County with the goal of educating them about what to do in the event of a fire. He brought all of his equipment and let the kids, who range in age from one to five years old, feel and try on his hat and fire protectant gear. He explained that if a fire ever happens, it is very important that they never hide. He suited up completely and told them that If they see a person wearing this suit, they are a friend and they are there to help. He also brought along his radio so that they could

Marc Adams School of Woodworking: A Weekend to Honor Those Who Have Served

During their 25 years of business, The Marc Adams School of Woodworking, located in Indianapolis, Indiana, has a rich history of giving back. This summer, the VFW National Home for Children was honored to have been the recipient of a generous donation from the tuition and donations of those attending a woodworking class to create wooden flag cases. These flag cases were donated to nursing home facilities across the Midwest to residents that could not afford them. There were 25 participants (20 of which are veterans) and a total of 200 flag cases were made. Thank you Marc Adams for all that you do for our nation's veterans and special thanks to Don Metcalf of Indiana VFW Post #6978 for th
