WWII Vet shares powerful survival story during Veterans Day Program

Earlier this week, National Home residents and staff were honored to have WWII Veteran and USS Indianapolis survivor Richard Thelen speak at our Veterans Day Program. Mr. Thelen, who is 89 and still lives on his own, drives, cooks and cleans, recounted his experience on that fateful day in July of 1945. Mr. Thelen told us of how he had joined the Navy at 17 to avoid being drafted into the Army. He was trained as a firefighter, and his job was to be present with an extinguisher whenever someone was welding. Before they were given their assignments, the young sailors were lined up, and they went down the line “1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2”. The ones went to the USS Arkansas, and the twos went to the USS

The National Home took time during its Annual Meeting of Life Members to thank outgoing Board of Trustees president Virginia Carman for her service to the National Home. While this marked the end of Virginia's term as president, the National Home will continue to benefit from her expertise and leadership for one more year, as her term on the board continues through 2017. Virginia, a member of the VFW Auxiliary Department of Washington, has had a distinguished career, holding many leadership positions including National President in 2007-2008. Saying Goodbye to District 6 Trustee, Jim Mueller

The National Home celebrated the service of District 6 Trustee, Jim Mueller, at this year's Annual Meeting of Life Members in October. Jim, from the Department of Missouri, first served on the VFW National Home for Children Board of Trustees during his term as VFW Commander-in-Chief and then was elected as District 6 Trustee in 2010, representing the Departments of Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and of course, Missouri. During his term, Jim served on all board committees. He was elected vice president of the board in 2013 and then president in 2014. Throughout that time, Jim has been extraordinarily conscientious, passionate and tireless in his work on behalf of the National Hom

Saying Goodbye to District 10 Trustee, Al Cantu

The National Home Board of Trustees celebrated the service of District 10 Trustee, Al Cantu, as he completed his term as trustee. Al, from the Department of Texas has served on the VFW National Home for Children Board of Trustees since 2010, representing the Departments of Arkansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and of course, Texas. Al first visited the National Home during the annual Jr. Vice Orientation in May 2009. After that visit -- and all he learned -- Al became a committed supporter of the Home.
