Volunteer Spotlight: Roxanne Partak

This week is National Volunteer Week and we would like to thank all of you who have offered your time, services, and expertise over the last year. Without selfless volunteers like you, we wouldn't be able to do what we do here at the National Home. This year, we would like to spotlight and honor a specific volunteer who has been working with us this year. Roxanne Partak is 21 years old and graduated last May from Michigan State University with her bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice. While she was busy pursuing her dream job of being a police officer, she also worked at the Broad Art Museum in East Lansing doing security work and began working with us as a volunteer. She has voluntee

An Introduction to the 4H Season

4H season is upon us and this year we are going to highlight a few of the kids and follow them on their journey throughout the Spring and Summer. To start off, we have Riley, our first timer! Riley is nine years old and is super excited to be able to show a pig this year! He has watched his brother Donavon for the past two years and really enjoyed helping him with his pig chores. We will also be following two seasoned veterans, Kassidy and Landon. Kassidy is 15 years old and has participated in 4H for four years. Landon is ten and this is his second year showing pigs (he showed a rabbit his first year). It's going to be fun learning how this program works and how kids benefit by lear

Spring kicks off with Easter Treat at the National Home!

Despite the recent April snowstorm, the weather was warm and breezy when the Cooties made their annual trek to the National Home this weekend for Easter Treat. The children were treated to an Easter egg hunt, a visit with the Easter Bunny in the Community Center auditorium, inflatables and other activities in the gymnasium, and an ice cream social in the cafe. Later on, everyone met up in the Community Center parking lot to head over to the Allskate Fun Center in Jackson to conclude the evening with a Roller Skating Party! Thank you Cooties for all that you do for the residents at the VFW National Home for Children! To see more pictures from this event, see our Flickr album.

Former Prisoners of War Recognition Day

April 9th is designated by Congress as the Presidentially proclaimed observance of National Former POW Recognition Day, a day to honor the American servicemen and women that have experienced unimaginable trials and profound cruelty as prisoners of war. April 9th is a significant date, because, on this date in 1942, the Bataan Death March began. This event was the forcible transfer, (later classified as a war crime), by the Imperial Japanese Army of 60,000–80,000 Filipino and American prisoners of war over sixty miles on foot, where they endured beatings, torture, and little food and water. Thousands of these POW's died. Former prisoners of war have withstood days, months, and sometimes years

VFW Post 805 Celebrates 4th Annual Fun Run for the VFW National Home!

.1 Kilometers is 328.08 feet, approximately the length of a football field. An achievable distance for most, and a wacky length for a charity race. It all started in 2013 when Paul and Sharon Zinck were visiting Paul's sister in Grand Rapids, Michigan. A local bar was holding a charity race inside of the bar to benefit the family of a boy who had passed away from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The turnout was pretty big, and Paul realized that it would be a great idea for a fundraiser at his VFW post in O'Fallon, Illinois. Thus, the .1K Fun Run, an annual event, benefiting the VFW National Home for Children, was born. The event has evolved over the years as it has grown. The race day start
