VFW Post 805 Celebrates 4th Annual Fun Run for the VFW National Home!

April 3, 2017

.1 Kilometers is 328.08 feet, approximately the length of a football field.  An achievable distance for most, and a wacky length for a charity race.  It all started in 2013 when Paul and Sharon Zinck were visiting Paul's sister in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  A local bar was holding a charity race inside of the bar to benefit the family of a boy who had passed away from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.  The turnout was pretty big, and Paul realized that it would be a great idea for a fundraiser at his VFW post in O'Fallon, Illinois. Thus, the .1K Fun Run, an annual event, benefiting the VFW National Home for Children, was born.

The event has evolved over the years as it has grown. The race day starts with a   carb-load station of pancakes.  There is a water cooler station for those who need a break at the 50-yard mark. Participants dress in silly costumes and are awarded prizes, and everybody has a great time.

The 805 has also inspired another .1K race called the Judd-A-Thon in Naperville, IL, and, this coming August, the VFW National Home for Children will be holding their own Fun Run on the streets of the National Home community.  Stay tuned for more information about this event!
